Before anyone can learn the basic guitar chords, one must know his guitar. In this article I will tell you the common parts of a guitar and its uses.

The guitar is one of the most widely used musical instrument around the globe. The possible reason for this is maybe because it brings joy to everybody whenever it is played. It’s very handy, easy to play and creates pleasurable music for the ears to hear. That is if you know the basic guitar chords to play.

Did you know that there several different types of guitar? Some of them are called Arched Top, Folk Style-Classic, Acoustic, Electric, etc.

Though they are different is some way, they also have many things in common like the head, tuning keys, nut, fret, finger board (this is where the basic guitar chords are played), bridge and of course a guitar wouldn’t be a guitar without the strings. Other guitar doesn’t have a sound hole like the one in the picture. This is because electric guitars have a solid body and instead of having a sound hole in the middle of the body, it has what we call the "pick-ups."

These pick-ups acts like a microphone of the guitar. Which is when an electric guitar is plugged in a speaker; it amplifies the sound generated by an electric guitar.

Parts of the Guitar

  • Head/Headstock – It the part of a guitar the holds the tuning keys.
  • Tuning Keys – The tuning keys/pegs holds the strings; strings are wrap around it and it is also used for tuning the guitar strings.
  • Nut – The nut is the one that holds the stings in place. Usually thin and made plastic, graphite or metal.
  • Finger Board – The Fret board is the one responsible for holding down the frets in place. This where the basic guitar chords are placed when playing the guitar.
  • Frets – These are the thin metal strips that divide the finger board. These acts like a separator from the basic guitar chords when played.
  • Sound Hole – A round opening in the middle of the guitar’s body that captures the sound of the strings thus amplifying the sounds generated by the strings.
  • Bridge – The bridges holds the string from the guitar’s body.
