Playing in the proper position is required for maximum comfort. It is also the most advisable position when learning the basic guitar chords.
There are different proper playing positions when playing the guitar or learning the basic guitar chords. But the most suitable position when learning the basic guitar chords is the “sitting position,” so we will discuss it first before the standing position.
Please do carefully study the proper playing positions, sitting and standing positions.
The Sitting Position
As I’ve keep mentioning to you, the sitting position is the best position when playing and learning the basic guitar chords.Provide an ordinary chair without an arm rest, as this will just get in the way of the guitar when you’re playing. It’s also important to put in consideration the height of the chair; don’t use chair that is too low.
Sit straight on the chair and cross your right leg over your left leg. Pick up your guitar and rest it in your lap. Press the guitar lightly against your body and let the weight of the guitar rest in your lap. Raise the fingerboard slightly towards your left shoulder and place your right forearm on top of the guitar. Now you’re ready to learn and play.
Note: You may or may not cross your legs when playing in the sitting position. Just make sure that you “sit straight” so you will not have any back problem after.
The Standing Position
The standing position requires that you have a guitar/neck strap to put in the end pin and the pin on the opposite side of the guitar, so you can play it in a standing position properly.Put on the guitar strap with the guitar and adjust the guitar strap to your most comfortable height. Your balance is the most important aspect of the standing position; make sure to distribute your weight on each leg evenly.
My advice to you is that you adjust your guitar strap on the most comfortable height of your guitar. Not too low and not to high, because you are still just starting to learn how to play the guitar and the basic guitar chords.
